Jane Burns
Bio
Jane is a visual artist based in Melbourne and trained in Sculpture at the VCA. She has worked in a range of mediums and over the last several years her practice is developing into a textile-based one. Since 2022, she has been producing handwoven tapestries created on a TC2 Jacquard loom and is interested in how this technology allows for the traditions of hand woven tapestry with the flexibility to use digital imagery and unconventional materials in the weave.
Her recent series of work, Movement (Arrest), focuses on capturing the drama of an individual and authority at the point of arrest at environmental protests. The work explores human interaction and the violent tensions during this time in humanity's history - when the increasing social change is so at odds with the political will.
This body of work is being produced in art residences and studios where the TC2 digital Jacquard loom is available as this technology is not publicly available in Australia. An upcoming residency at UNSW Art & Design School will provide access to the loom and time to work on studies for a new series, Disrupt.
In addition to her arts practice, Jane also works as an environmental consultant in the community sector and this work profoundly influences her art practice and the environmental themes that permeate it. In this work she advises schools, businesses, government and community groups on pathways to Net-Zero, providing education and engagement across all aspects of this work. In 2015, Jane was recognised for her contribution in Victoria and was awarded the Victorian Environmental & Sustainability Educator of the Year.
